About

안녕하십니까? My name is Andrew Cheng; I'm a native Californian and a graduate of Swarthmore College ('12). I began working at Changwon Science High School in Changwon, Korea in August 2012. My two-year stint as an English teacher has been made possible by a grant sponsored by the Fulbright Program, which seeks to equip Americans to be cultural ambassadors by means of education and cultural immersion. So I kind of work for the U.S. government. It's a noble cause, I promise.

This blog reflects my own experiences and viewpoints and should not be mistaken for an official Fulbright blog. For the most part, I like to write about the small, fun things that happen every day here in Korea. But, I'm beginning to reflect on what education means (to me, to my students, to Koreans and Americans, etc.) and sometimes this is manifested in a rambly post or two. Also, I love to take photos of basically everything and throw them online haphazardly.

Feel free to leave a comment or ask me anything about my life in Korea!

  1. Wow! your blog is awesome. Right now I am studying Korean, and I really want to go to Korea as a teacher once I finish college in a few years. Do you have any tips that would help me to do my best to prepare for it?

    1. Thank you! Right now, I'd encourage you to study Korean and Korean culture as best you can, so that you don't have *too* much culture shock when you arrive here. The better your Korean skills, the easier life will be for you here. You could also check out waygook.org and become active on the forums. It's never too early to start preparing. 화이팅!

  3. Hey Andrew, (don't know if my precedent message was sent so i try again !) I really like your blog. I am currently making a documentary about North Korean refugees and you post on this topic was useful for my research. I am going to Seoul from the 12 of August until the 16 of September to begin to work on it. I would like to know if, by any chance, you would accept to help me on this project. Here my email : hanawon.documentary@gmail.com (and fb if you prefer : léa Luiz de Oliveira)
